How long is the recovery from wisdom tooth removal?

Updated in June of 2026

Most Fort Collins patients ask Dr. Rush the same question before their procedure: how long does wisdom teeth removal recovery actually take? The honest answer is that it varies, but most people feel back to normal within a few days. The full wisdom teeth recovery timeline from extraction to complete healing runs anywhere from three days to two weeks, depending on how many teeth we remove, how complex the procedure is, and how well you follow aftercare instructions.

The Wisdom Tooth Recovery Timeline

Here is what to expect during wisdom teeth removal recovery, stage by stage:

Days 1 to 3: Initial healing
The first three days bring the most noticeable symptoms. Expect some bleeding, swelling, and bruising around the extraction sites. Eat soft foods during this period, such as yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup, and smoothies. Avoid drinking from a straw, since the suction can dislodge the blood clot forming in the socket and cause a painful condition called dry socket. Rest as much as you can and keep your head elevated when sleeping to reduce swelling.

Days 4 to 7: Returning to normal
By day four, most patients notice a significant improvement. Swelling starts to subside and discomfort becomes much more manageable. You can gradually reintroduce softer solid foods and return to normal daily activities. If you had a straightforward extraction, you may feel close to 100% by the end of this week.

Week 2: Surface healing
After about two weeks, the extraction sites close over at the surface and you can bring most harder foods back into your diet. The underlying bone continues to remodel beneath the surface, but you will not notice this process day to day.

What extends the wisdom teeth recovery timeline

A few factors can lengthen recovery. Impacted wisdom teeth that sit below the gum line require more involved surgery than fully erupted teeth. Removing multiple teeth at once also adds recovery time. Following your aftercare instructions closely, especially avoiding straws and smoking in the first few days, gives you the best chance at a smooth, straightforward recovery.
