‘Tis the season!!

The holidays are a time of delightful abundance — friends, family, food, drinks… sweets. As we enter the heart of the festive season, it’s important to remember the importance of remaining mindful of your oral health, even as you occasionally indulge!

Indulge Mindfully

Though delicious, the sugars in Christmas cookies, candy canes, peppermint bark, hot chocolate, and eggnog create a fertile environment for the harmful plaque and tartar-causing bacteria.

It’s not our intention to keep anyone from snacking as they celebrate. At the same time, it’s vital to keep moderation front and center in your mind. Enjoying your favorite treats responsibly, especially the stickier ones that can cling to your teeth, helps minimize the damaging effects of sugar on your dental health.

An additional tip: whenever possible, make a point of opting for tooth-friendly snacks like cheese, whole-grain crackers, raw vegetables with hummus, veggie-based dips, and dark chocolate.

Stay Hydrated

Holiday indulgence doesn’t only mean food. More parties with friends, family, colleagues, and classmates bring more cocktails and sugary drinks than usual. Without conscious care, this can mean dehydration.

Staying hydrated during the holidays is helpful to both oral and overall health. Drinking water regularly, in addition to making for easier “mornings after,” helps rinse out your mouth and wash away food particles and bacteria that can cause plaque, tartar, and cavities.

Maintain Your Dental Care Routine

As you celebrate, remember to maintain — or, ideally, step up — your oral hygiene routine. Make sure to keep brushing and flossing at least twice a day and rinsing regularly with antibacterial mouthwash — more if you’re really into sugary snacks. When brushing isn't immediately possible, rinse your mouth with water. Also, as a supplement to help reduce the impact of sugar on your teeth.
