Periodontitis is an advanced gum disease that needs immediate medical attention. It is a condition that destroys the soft tissue of the gums and bones that support the teeth. This can lead to tooth loss and other chronic conditions like heart disease and stroke.
The most standard treatment for periodontitis is a scaling and root planing procedure followed by an Arestin treatment. Arestin (minocycline hydrochloride) is an antibiotic that cures an infection caused by the bacteria.
At Ryan Rush DDS PLLC in Fort Collins, CO 80526, we provide Arestin treatments that work quickly, precisely at the source of infection, and keep fighting bacteria for a considerable period.
What Is Arestin?
Arestin is an antibacterial treatment used to kill the bacteria that cause periodontitis. To treat periodontitis, an intense deep-cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing is performed. This is done to comprehensively remove the harmful bacteria and plaque accumulation on the teeth and gums. Additionally, root planing will help smooth the tooth roots to prevent the formation of these microorganisms.
After performing this deep cleaning, Arestin, in the form of an antibiotic powder, is directly applied to the infected gum tissue pockets detected during the procedure. It ensures that harmful bacteria die and that the infection does not reappear as you heal.
What Is the Process for Arestin?
Arestin works by destroying harmful microorganisms and rooted diseases. It contains tiny bead-like microspheres of minocycline, a powerful tetracycline antibiotic. The microspheres work gradually over time, and a single dose of Arestin treatment can protect you for up to twenty-one days after your scaling and root planing procedure. By the time Arestin wears off, you should be fully recovered and able to avoid a recurrence of periodontitis with adequate oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing.
This treatment is only performed in-office, and therefore the chances of overdosing on the procedure are non-existent. However, receiving the treatment for periodontitis is better than losing your teeth entirely to this problem that affects numerous people.
